ICHS ARNP/Family Nurse Practitioner Residency Program





ICHS is the largest organization that provides healthcare for low income Asian, Pacific Islanders, immigrants and refugees in Washington State. Our residency program provides you with superb training from top-notch clinicians and educators who are highly experienced in caring for community health center patients.

The residency program begins with a four-week intensive orientation by ICHS and residency program clinical leaders to the responsibilities and privileges of medical staff participation at ICHS. Throughout the program, residents will have a ramp-up schedule to allow for the best learning opportunities while building and maintaining their own patient panels.

Program Goals

  • Prepare residents for their post-residency careers to provide full and autonomous expert care to community health center patients
  • Provide nurse practitioners with an appreciation of the depth, breadth, volume and intensity of clinical education necessary to serve as primary care providers in the complex setting of community health centers
  • Improve the cultural competency of new nurse practitioners who choose to work in community settings
  • Provide training to improve employee satisfaction and workforce retention
  • Prepare nurse practitioners to be ready for leadership roles in community health settings

Residency Objectives

ICHS ARNP Residency Objectives

There are six objectives for the residency curriculum detailed in the table below.

Clinical Competency: The resident will

Demonstrate adequate fund of knowledge including appropriate application of evidence based medicine, ordering diagnostic and screening tests, as well as safe and effective prescribing of pharmacotherapy and other treatments
Elicit appropriate and relevant history and proficient physical exam skills
Provide presentations and documentation that are organized, concise, thorough and timely
Provide comprehensive care to the complex patient by prioritizing acute illness and chronic disease states appropriately
Maintain appropriate level of efficiency in clinical practice
Understand personal knowledge base, and works within scope of practice

Integrative Healthcare: The resident will

Request referrals and consultations appropriately using professional and community resources; considers alternative approaches
Provide patient-centered care, recognizing the impact of psychosocial factors

Confidence: The resident will

Demonstrate appropriate level of confidence through commitment to a working diagnosis and care plan

Cultural Competency: The resident will

Provide patient-centered care, recognizing cultural diversity and including patient or designee as a full partner in decision making
Provide appropriate education and instruction within the context of patient’s healthcare literacy and culture, including anticipatory guidance

Leadership: The resident will

Collaborate effectively with colleagues and other multidisciplinary team members, including support staff
Delegate appropriately so that all team members are functioning at the top of their skillsets
Provide feedback that is respectful, direct, timely, and constructive
Recognize and participates in quality improvement initiatives to improve health systems

Resilience: The resident will

Reflect on and evaluates his/her own clinical progress, strengths, and areas for improvement
Receive, reflect on, and integrate respectful feedback to continually improve his/her own clinical practice
Express his/her needs for professional and clinical growth effectively with colleagues, including supervisors and support staff
