Women’s and Children’s Services
ICHS offers the following services for pregnant women, new mothers, and young children:
First Steps is a program that helps income-qualified pregnant women or new mothers connect to health care and other services they may need. First Steps is available to qualified women as soon as they know they are pregnant.
Women Infants and Children Nutrition Program (WIC)
WIC is a federally-funded, supplemental food and nutrition assistance program for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and children up to their fifth birthday. To qualify for WIC, you must live in Washington state, meet the income guidelines, and be considered “nutritionally at-risk” by a health professional. WIC services include:
- Food vouchers for supplemental nutritious foods
- Nutrition assessment and education
- Breastfeeding education
- Screenings and referrals to other health and social services
The WIC program holds breastfeeding classes at both clinics. In addition, breastfeeding peer counselors are available for phone or in-person consultation.
The WIC nutritionist (registered dietician) also works in conjunction with ICHS clinic staff to provide outpatient Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for ICHS patients of all ages.
