Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)

ICHS provides medical nutrition therapy (MNT) through a dietitian, who works with the medical team to improve health and manage disease through a special diet and prescribed nutrition. MNT includes a comprehensive assessment to make a nutrition diagnosis, create an individualized nutrition plan and monitor progress. MNT is an effective treatment for a variety of conditions, including:

  • Cancer treatment, including radiation and chemotherapy
  • Cardiovascular conditions (cholesterol, hypertension, etc.)
  • Diabetes
  • Food allergies and intolerances
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Renal disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Pediatric nutrition
  • Women’s health (pregnancy, lactation, osteoporosis, anemia)
  • Weight management

Women Infants and Children Nutrition Program (WIC)

WIC is a federally-funded, supplemental food and nutrition assistance program for pregnant women, breastfeeding women and children up to their fifth birthday. To qualify for WIC, you must live in Washington state, meet the income guidelines and be considered “nutritionally at-risk” by a health professional. Find more information on the WIC program in Washington state, including income guidelines. WIC services include:

  • Food vouchers for supplemental nutritious foods
  • Nutrition assessment and education
  • Breastfeeding education
  • Screenings and referrals to other health and social services

The WIC program holds breastfeeding classes at ICHS’ Seattle locations in the International District and Holly Park. In addition, breastfeeding peer counselors are available for phone or in-person consultation.

Maternity support Services

ICHS offers First Steps for pregnant women, new mothers and young children to make sure mother and baby are healthy through pregnancy, childbirth and the first year of life. First Steps helps income-qualified pregnant women or new mothers connect to health care that includes nutrition-based services. First Steps is available to qualified women as soon as they know they are pregnant.
