Hong Ming Cheng has had a chronic heart condition for a number of years, but up until he started seeing the medical providers at International Community Health Services about three years ago, he did not see the doctor to help manage his health.
“I had no health insurance, and so, I only saw the doctor and bought my medicines when I went to Taiwan for a visit,” said Mr. Cheng, 66, a retired energy industry technician who drives up from his home in Tacoma to see his doctor at the ICHS International District Medical Clinic.
“Before I came to ICHS, I did not have any medical check up,” said Mr. Cheng, who moved to the United States about eight years ago.
Mr. Cheng receives treatment at the ICHS for his heart condition, which includes a monthly blood test. He said a friend referred him to the clinic, and that made a world of difference in his life.
He said receiving treatment from Chinese-speaking providers put him at ease and helped him better manage his health. “It’s good to speak directly to the doctor and to get answers to my questions immediately,” he said.
Aside from treatment for his heart condition, he has also participated in other ICHS programs and received assistance from other ICHS professionals, including advice on his diet from certified nutritionists to help him manage his weight.
“My experience as a patient at ICHS has been very good,” he said.
